Item 605A is a solution of 10% w/v polyvinylpyrrolidone Iodine complex (povidone iodine) in water. It provides 1% w/v Iodine and is generally used as the trapping agent in Gram’s stain. Uncomplexed Iodine rapidly diffuses through the walls of most plastics. Hence uncomplexed Iodine has a short shelf life while povidone Iodine has a full eighteen month shelf life.
