Modified acid-fast (partial acid-fast) stains are recommended for identifying Cryptosporidium and Isospora species. A method has been developed for simultaneous determination of cryptosporidia and microsporidia. The method involves acid fast staining with Kinyoun carbol fuchsin followed by counter staining with methylene blue or malachite green.
