Item 604A is a solution of Iodine and potassium iodide in water. It is generally used as the trapping agent in Gram’s stain. Uncomplexed Iodine rapidly diffuses through the walls of most plastics and has a short shelf life while povidone Iodine has a full eighteen month shelf life. Hence 10% povidone Iodine has generally replaced uncomplexed Iodine. MCC also has uncomplexed Gram’s Iodine packaged in a special plastic that is more impervious to Iodine and has a full shelf life.
